In order to be prepared for the possibility of eLearning days that may occur in the case of inclement weather or other situations, we have worked to create guidelines that offer both flexibility and support for our teachers and students.
According to current state guidelines, educators are required to provide for student engagement for a total of 5.5 hours for elementary students and 6.0 total hours for middle school each e-Learning day. Student engagement time may consist of reading, studying, watching assigned lessons or videos, and work completion. Of the student engagement time, at least 200 minutes of instruction should be provided to students, and these instructional minutes can be delivered in different ways.
Teachers are to be available via email to assist students and/or parents within the hours of a normal school day. Students may, however, complete assignments at any time during the course of the eLearning day. As such, students may not necessarily seek teacher assistance during normal school hours and will not be required to log-on to the computer during designated times.
Students without Wi-Fi or students who have not completed work for the assigned day(s), will have up to 5 days after returning to school to submit their assignments before the student will be marked absent for the day.
Teacher email addresses are listed on the Faculty/Staff page by hovering over the teacher's name.
Teachers will provide students with 200 minutes of instruction appropriate for the age/grade level. If assignments are not provided the day prior to the eLearning day, teachers will post assignments and activities for students by 9:00 AM. In order to be marked present on the eLearning day, students will need to complete assignments provided by the teacher or assigned in Seesaw or Schoology. Teachers will provide students with relevant and meaningful assignments that correspond to the learning taking place in the classroom. Examples of instructional assignments may include independent reading, reading and writing journals, math practice, iReady personal pathway lessons, assigned videos, etc.
Teachers will assess the student's work and determine if the student has met the instructional goals for the day. The actual amount of time online is less important that the work produced and/or created by the student to demonstrate learning and mastery of learning targets. As a school, we are still held accountable for attendance on an eLearning Day. Students will be counted present when they complete and submit their digital assignments on an eLearning Day or submit completed assignments within the five-day make-up window. If neither of these options are utilized, the student will be counted absent and assignments graded in accordance with the teacher's grading policy.
What if a student does not have access to the Internet?
We are aware that not all students have Internet access at home. When we anticipate having an eLearning Day, students will be given ample time at school to download all assignments and supporting materials. In the case of eLearning Days that are not anticipated, all students will have 2 packets of paper assignments located in their school folder that students should complete on eLearning Days. These assignments will be sent home at the beginning of the school year.
Because power and internet outages are possible during school cancellations, all students are encourage to download all materials prior to the anticipated eLearning Day. However, if student are not able to access the eLearning assignments for that day, they will have a grace period of five school days to makeup the assignments.
If you are having technical difficulties, the first step is to let your teacher know. Teachers are able to address many technical support questions. If your teacher is unable to resolve the problem, he/she will refer you to our School Technology Coordinator, Ms. Cherie Winkler, for additional guidance. You can reach her by email at cherie.winkler@gouchercharter.org.
Dynabook is having problems: Restart: Save work can close your applications. Go to the Start Menu, choose "Restart".
App is stuck or not responding: Force Quit: Pn your keyboard, press and hold CTRL + ALT + Delete. It will immediately bring up a list of options. Click "Task Manager". Select the frozen application and select "quit".
Computer won't start: Hard Shut-Down: Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then release it and try turning it back on.
Computer won't charge: Unplug the charger from the computer, then reconnect it. Make sure the charger port is clean where the power connects to the computer. Check the connection to the wall. Try a reset as outlined above. If it still won't charge, leave it plugged in while using it and report it to the school when you return to school.
Completing assignments on your personal device: When using your own device to access school resources like Schoology, iReady, IXL, Seesaw, etc., try downloading and installing Apps from the App store or Google Play store.
I can't access my assignment: When a student has a question on eLearning days, they should contact their teacher. If the question cannot be answered by the teacher, the student will be directed to the School Technology Coordinator, Ms. Cherie Winkler (cherie.winkler@gouchercharter.org). Many problems may be solved by a simple reboot or turning Wi-Fi to the devices off and then back on. Remember that if the power is out, there is probably no Wi-Fi even though the Dynabook runs off of battery power.
I'm having trouble signing-in on a shared computer: Sometimes, when sharing a computer, multiple people sign-in to their online accounts and don't sign out. It is important, especially for parents, to sign-out of any personal and work accounts before your child participates in virtual classroom activities. This will help avoid conflicts between parents' accounts and any of your child's school accounts.
